PUNJAB

Punjab is Pakistan’s agricultural and economic heartland that contributes about 80 percent of the country’s food requirements by producing more than 80% of cotton, 75% wheat, 74% sugarcane, and 53% rice. More than 73% cropped area of Pakistan’s Indus food machine is situated in Punjab. Due to a predominantly arid and semi-arid climate, more than 80% of the cropped area is irrigated. Irrigated agriculture is, in fact, the spearhead of Punjab’s agro-based economy accounting for about 25.6% of GDP.

About two-third of the population residing in rural areas rely on this sector for their livelihood. The interventions under the NPIWC-II project would entail rehabilitation and upgrading of farm-level irrigation infrastructure in conjunction with the provision of laser land levelers to the farmers/service providers.

The combined effects of these interventions:

  • Contribute significantly to enhancing crop yields
  • Increase farm incomes
  • Improve the livelihood of people
  • Adjust agricultural practices with varying environments
  • Alleviate poverty in Punjab.
